  1. Today I learned about the different types of skills that are used in order to create a logical and efficient argument. During class, I learned about QUEST, a framework that will help me improve my critical thinking, investigation skills, and make connections between the information that I know and the information given. The different letters mean different skills that, by the end of the school year, I must be a master of. I also learned how to do a Toulmin Argument. There is a format that is used when writing and reading in the "Toulmin way", which basically uses warrants, backing, counter-arguments, rebuttal, claims, and qualifiers. When all of these elements come together, a strong argument can be formulated. There was an example of a Toulmin argument used by Dr. Drew in which he basically cross-examined Charlie Sheen. Dr. Drew provided several claims and assumptions and connected those with his prior knowledge to finally establish a well-formulated conclusion. The way Dr. Drew did the Toulmin argument was clear and concise, which allowed the speaker understand the topic to its entirety. Finally, I also read a Toulmin argument about child beauty pageants, in which the author used evidence in order to back her argument up: child beauty pageants should change. Using both the written and oral examples, I understood what was expected from me in the upcoming assignments, as well as learning how to do both written and oral Toulmin arguments. I am very excited to do one of them myself.

  2. Today’s class was interesting. We got to discuss about the QUEST in teams, each team member reading a specific part. I could identify how the QUEST is in charge of guiding me and my classmates to develop strong arguments while writing. Besides, the QUEST gave me knowledge about how to go deeper in investigation, connecting claims, evaluate different perspectives, and get ideas well organized for structured arguments. While reading Mariah Jackson’s essay about Beauty Pageants I got to see an example of how an argument is placed in an essay, its claims, and contradictions. With this example it will be easier for me to construct a strong argument and research about any topic to make an essay. To conclude, I got to identify the Toulin method which is a different and useful method of looking at controversial arguments. This method is focused on exploring favoritism or bias, giving support, and assumptions. Profitable tips to follow and an oral example of the method are given throughout the article.

Today August 21 we made teams during class to read the QUEST. By this activity, it helped me extend my way of knowledge on how to think critically and make well-stated connections. The framework was divided into 5 parts, each one represented by a letter of the word “QUEST”. After analyzing I learn that questioning every part of the context is essential, understanding and evaluating others perspectives was a crucial point that we cannot miss, the line of reasoning should have synthesized ideas, and that working in teams will help us get each person strength to come up with the best outcome. Subsequently, I read Mariah Jackson's Toulmin Argument. I really like her way of organizing her claims, ideas, evidence, and reasoning to convince the reader. In my personal experience, she really convinces me that little girl pageants were not good. Before reading it I was not a fan of girl pageants neither against it. I found it funny how little girls were competing against each other. After reading this Mariah totally achieve to change my way of thinking. Finally, I read “How to use Toulmin Analysis” and the video. I understood how Mariah order all the context to transmit the correct message and convince the reader. After reading the comparison between classical vs. Toulmin I am looking forward to trying the use of warrants, backing, counter-arguments, and rebuttals in my future arguments to make it believable.

In our second class of AP Seminar, I learn new things that I look forward on practicing them through the year. In class, we were divided into groups of 5, and we read the "QUEST Framework". What I learn after reading that is that before evaluating you need to have different perspectives about the argument, collect perspectives from different people before evaluating an argument. I also learn that in a team, everyone should use their best strength in order to reach a goal. Then I read the text from Mariah Jackson where she has an argument. She backups her point of view, and convinces the author that the child beauty pageants is something bad that affects the children's growth because they grow in a different way than normal children. Then I read "How to use a Toulmin Analysis". A toulmin argument is much more complex than a classical argument, and I would like to learn hot to work with toulmin arguments.

Today in class we made teams to read the QUEST and each member of the team read one letter to explain it later. The QUEST is a framework which help us develop our critical thinking skills. After that we saw a google slides presentation about argument and we needed to create a thesis and support it with claims. After that I read Mariah Jackson's Argument and the comments someone wrote in her essay. She applied the Toulmin method, first I didn't understand why the comments talked about warrants and backings and rebuttal, but we were asked to read an article about the Toulmin method which explained every element of this type of arguments. I learned that the Toulmin method is focused more on thinking for your audience, what I mean is that your need to focus on what your audience believe so they can be persuaded easily. Also they explain that a strong way to persuade the audience is by doing counter-arguments, so they'll se you have checked both point of views and you truly believe in what your argument is about.

  6. Today, August 21st our teacher Ms Martha Laura assign on to read the QUEST on teams of four. The activity "QUEST" is a framework aiming to improve your critical thinking skills, argumentation and investigation skills. It may also help to create allusions between ideas and details to create an efficient argument. The letters that compose the word "QUEST" had a different meaning, describing the different aspects that an argument must have. This aspects must help me to ease my way while cursing this class. I also learned about the Toulmin Argument, which is basically conformed by different aspects such as : counter-arguments, warrants, rebuttals, backing information, and facts. The combination of all this aspects will create well reasoned arguments. On the lecture, the gave an assignment from Dr. Drew, who's patient was Charlie Sheen. Dr. Drew explained a series of claims and possible hypothesis. He provides the reader arguments that are straight to the point, they're brief and explain the main idea concisely.

  7. Lorena: In yesterdays class I learn about, different points of views or layers that AP Seminar has. You have to consider a lot of factors when writing an essay. For example, you need to know not only your argument but your counter-argument as well. A well-written essay doesn't only have the positive things about your case it also states the negative ones, that way your essay and argument are much stronger. The essay on Toulmin A, helped me understand how she didn't put something positive about the argument that pageants are bad. She could have put the point of view of the children and how their mindset changes thanks to their parents. The video was something completely different from the essay not just in a topic, but also that an expert was the one that was expressing his opinion on the matter and they had video evidence to prove the argument.

During class, we learned about the QUEST framework. It will help me when reading any sort of text because by using i t I will be able to understand the author and his/her point of view. By asking myself the questions that QUEST provides I will be able to create a good put together argument. Then, by reading the Toulmin Argument I learned that captivating the reader's attention is something really essential when presenting a persuasive essay. The ultimate objective is to change the reader's point of view, so he/she must stay attentive through the whole essay. Also, having a counter-argument makes the thesis more convincing because the reader gets to experience multiple points of view on the argument. Mariah Jackson's essay will definitely help me in the future as a guide for my essays. This also gave me a good idea of how to leave good feedback on someone's essay. Learned the difference between a normal argument and a toulmin argument. They are structured differently but the main difference is that a toulmin argument is more complex because it gives more reasons and explanations to convince the reader. Finally I learned about Stephan Toulmin, the man behind this method.

  9. After only two classes of AP Seminar I can say I now know how to write better arguments. I learned that a good argument does not only defend a point, but has counter arguments and different perspectives on the same topic. I learned that in order to convince an audience, an argument must have not only claims, but facts. After reading the QUEST framework, I understood better how to evaluate different points of view. I learned I need to explore for every question, understand and analyze all arguments, evaluate all perspectives, combine ideas for better understanding, and finally, work in team in order to combine talents, transform our ideas to thoughtful reflections and transmit this information to a new audience. The combination of all of this will lead to a good argument and conclusion.

We started off Tuesday's class reading the QUEST Framework documents in teams of five. This structure is used in the AP Capstone program to help students acquire various skills that will be much needed throughout this rigorous course and also later in life. Each letter in the word "quest" represents a different step that will help you synthesis and transmit well elaborated argument. We then learned more information about arguments, including a completely new way to create them, the Toulmin Analysis. This new method of viewing arguments consists of examining your audience to form your claim carefully, using warrants and backing them up to present legitimate information, and to consider assumptions offering a rebuttal against them. We had to view a video and read an article about the Toulmin Analysis, to know how it is presented verbally and in a written form. Both ways work the same, presenting a heavily supported argument that starts from common ground with the audience and then changes their mind. I hope to try this innovative way of forming an argument later in the course.

  11. Lidia Sarmiento: During class, I learned about the QUEST framework. It's purpose is to use it as a guideline to build better arguments, to work on research methods and adapting the information for the audience. Each letter focuses on a different skill or topic that will help you structure arguments. This will not only be used in this class, but in other future projects outside of the AP Seminar course. At home, I real the article "How to Use Toulmin Analysis" by Virginia Kearney. This text showed me a new way of looking at arguments based on Stephan Toulmin's method. I now know the difference between a classical argument and the Toulmin arguments. These include warrants, backings, rebuttals and qualifiers and the classical arguments do not focus too much on these concepts. In the article, there was a video about Charlie Sheen in which Dr.Drew used a Toulmin argument to prove that his case was serious and needed help. I am looking forward to apllying my new knowledge into future assignments.

During class, we learned about the QUEST framework. We were divided into groups of five for every student to have one letter to learn about. This structure was created by AP Capstone and has the purpose is for people to use it as a tool to make better statement and arguments. QUEST also helps people work on research methods and making the good information for the people watching. Each letter of QUEST, means something different, and has different skills that help structuring arguments. For homework, I read the article "How to Use Toulmin Analysis" by Virginia Kearney. Philosopher Stephan Toulmin came up with a theory of seeing arguments. There is a big difference between both arguments. Also, in this article there was a Charlie Sheen where Dr. Drew used this method of argument to prove his point.
