Melissa What statements strengthen your argument? -Poor childhood diet linked to low IQ, suggests study. - A diet high in fats, sugars, and processed foods in early childhood may result in lower IQ scores - A healthy diet was associated with a higher IQ at the age of 8.5, with every one point increase in dietary pattern linked to a 1.2 increase in IQ.
What statements undermine your argument? "Dietary patterns between the ages of four and seven had no impact on IQ." "Saturated fat is actually one of the main components of brain cells, and is therefore necessary for healthy brain function."
Are the points made in logical order? Why? The points that I will include in my research paper do have a logical order. They all connect to each other. I try to focus on the topic and avoid drastic changes. Transitions between subtopics are smoothly made. First I start talking about general information and progressively I start getting into closer details.
What statements strengthen your argument? Right now, I don't have much statements that strengthen my argument, since my Individual Written Assignment is not fully developed. I will include more statements that support it in the following paragraphs that will defend my thesis. Most of them will include Jaeggi's studies and her findings that prove how fluid intelligence is increased. Such as the participants' increased ability to solve tests, or how they could preform better in unrelated problems.
What statements undermine your argument? My argument is undermined when I say that Jaeggi's research is controversial and that other psychologists hace gone against it. For example: "Jaeggi, conducted a controversial investigation that would divide the psychological realm", and "Even though there are those that contradict her studies". I still have to include these phrases because they will be addressed and refuted in my counterargument paragraph.
Are the points made in logical order? Why? I have not yet finished my Individual Research Assignment but I will make sure all points are in a logical order. This will make the essay look and sound better, allowing an easier understanding of it. Also, stating everything with a logical order will make the argument more credible and compelling.
What statements strengthen your argument? -The mental illness of schizophrenia is highly heritable. If the child has one schizophrenic parent the risk is of 7 to 12 percent. -Mutations in the brain can develop or form over time which can eventually lead to mental illness. -Childhood trauma, greatly contributes to the development of a person. A previous traumatic experience can trigger a problem in the future. -A Study by The National Institute of Psychiatry “Ramón de la fuente” conducted tests to perceive the possible correlation between creativity and psychopathology. The results showed no relation whatsoever.
What statements undermine your argument? -Highly creative minds like Vincent Van Gogh, Louis Wain, Anne Sexton and Virginia Woolf have all shown psychopathological tendencies. -For years, great philosophers like Aristoteles have said that “No great mind has existed without a touch of madness.”
Are the points made in logical order? Why? So far, the points I have on my IWA are all over the place. Since I'm not writing in any specific order. I started with the conclusion but Ii then jumped to the last claim and the counter argument. But once I arrange it, it will make sense. But the points that I included in this answer are in logical order because they first present the argument or statement it wants to make and then there is a brief explanation to it.
What statements strengthen your argument? -There was a research conducted by Dr. Kyla Wahlstrom of the University of Minnesota, the study involve a correlation between teenager’s sleep habits and grades. This research is used as evidence to clarify how sleep deprivation is lowering teen’s IQ. - Sleep deprivation may decrease a person’s IQ by standard deviation, making individuals act the next day as if they acquire a learning disability.
What statements undermine your argument? As my IWA is not fully developed and finished, there are not clear statements that undermine the argument. I am looking forward to work on my report as much as I can so I may identify the statements that undermine my arguments.
Are the points in logical order? I do believe the points I have made so far in my IWA are in logical order. My IWA is well organized by main points including the effects of sleep deprivation one by one each one of them explained with detail. As I have not finished, I also commit myself to continue adding logical information by making connections within claims and statements in order to make my IWA enriched and fully organized.
What statements strengthen your argument? - As expected, these veterans start presenting unnoticeable wounds after they finish their service with their respective division due to the high level of intensity and elevated risk of their missions. PTSD symptoms are very significant since they start to arouse at least for a month. - Depression, anxiety, irritability, cognitive impairment and sleeping disturbance are common problems associated with PTSD in veterans (Lew et al., 2008; Stein & McAllister, 2009). - Recent studies inform that the degree of PTSD directly relates to the explicitness and clearness of the memory fragment of the traumatic event (Bryant et al., in press). What statements undermine your argument? - Since I haven't fully developed my IWA I have no arguments that undermine my overall arguments. Yet, I think that as long as I continue to develop my IWA this type of arguments will start to arouse naturally. This type of arguments help increase the veracity and reliability of the report. Are the points made in logical order? Why? - I strongly believe that the arguments that I included in my IWA are in logical order. After reading again my IWA pI realized that the logical order of my ideas and their flow was one of the things that I would highlight. Even though I haven't finished with the report, I will try to follow this same path to enhance the clearness of my ideas.
Alejandro: What statements strengthen your argument? Chess game plays a big role on empowering cognitive skills. To be more precise, chess is important to improve memorization, strategy, planning and patience.
What statements undermine your argument? Chess game is also a game that may cause stress. Actually, there is a case in which Kurt Meier, a chess player died due to a collapse on his final match in a chess tournament due to stress.
Are the points made in logical order? Why? The points all of them lead to the same point of positive factors of playing chess, there isn't an exact sequence but there are all logical and the order isn't important.
Lidia: What statements strengthen your argument? -Students who study the arts achieve significantly higher scores in the SAT exams than those who do not study the arts. - Art education has been proven to strengthen memory practice, whether it refers to cognitive training or muscle memory. -Involvement in artistic fields has also proven to improve the effectiveness of executive functions.
What statements undermine your argument? - The correlation between IQ and the arts has been subject to research for decades now, trying to prove whether there is a direct connection between artistic activities and intelligence quotients. Some argue that these results are the effect of a generalized causal inference or a mere coincidence.
Are the points made in logical order? Why? I believe that the arguments that I have included in my IWA so far present a logical order. This is because they follow the thesis through every paragraph. A subunit of the thesis is discussed further in each paragraph, going into specific examples and studies that prove the point.
What statements strengthen your argument? -IQ tests are inaccurate ways of measuring intelligence - Brain development does not mean that a person is more intelligent than another person with less developed brains What statements undermine your argument? - The brain can be trained in order to make a person more intelligent. Although the effects are not permanent, the person sees a boost in their intelligence. I wanted to use this argument as a counterargument, but it might be weak - IQ tests are still the best intelligence tests available and they are accepted as a coefficient that measures, to an extent, the intelligence of a person. Are the points made in logical order? Why? -The points are made in logical order, although the connection between these points can be improved. I follow the order presented in my thesis statement and each of the claims have their corresponding evidence and experts discussing the issues.
What statements strengthen your argument? How the emotions are important when it comes to the brain getting knowledge (academic). What statements undermine your argument? How the emotions are a way that acquire vocabulary is related. Are the points made in logical order? Why? I will made the essay in order for the strongest and go on from there. Since I think that the reader should be interested from the beginning of the essay. Also a logical approach I will place my thesis statement first and them use the evidence that I have to establish my claims. Lorena Baldit
